How to connect your new Mac to your HD TV...

After recently getting my hands on a new Unibody MacBook laptop I wanted to connect it up to a HD LCD TV so I could watch some HD videos. What I assumed would be an easy process wasn't as straight forward as I first hoped...

The first problem I encountered is that the new Unibody Mac's and the Macbook Air are equiped with a MiniDisplay Port as the only source of video out. This is great if you own a brand spanking new 24" Apple Cinema Display but not so great if you have an older style computer monitor or you want to connect your Mac to your large screen HD TV. Apple sell adapters that go from MiniDisplay Port to VGA or DVI which is great if your TV supports full HD through these connection but unfortunately some HD TV's such as the Sony Bravia models will only display an image at a maximum of 1360 x 786 (720p HD) when using the VGA port. However if you use a HDMI input you should be able to get full HD resolution ( 1920 x 1080 or 1080p FULL HD) which is want you want (assuming your TV is capable of full HD)

Apple MiniDisplay Port

What you'll need is an adapter that converts MiniDisplay Port to HDMI. Unfortunaltey Apple doesn't make these adapters so I had to look else where. As I quickly found, not many places in Australia sold such an adapter, and the few places that did were charging an arm and a leg for them. With a bit more research I found a few places in the USA where I could purchase these adapters for a much lower price, however the price of shipping a single cable destroyed that idea pretty quickly.

Figuring I was not along in this quest I took a punt and ordered a bunch assuming I could sell the additional adapters and also help support the Australian Mac community by providing these cables at an afforable price. The inital response was great so to keep up with demand I have created this page to allow everyone to order cables directly through this page. I have decided to go with Paypal for payment as it provides the easiest and safest way for a secure payment and also helps to keep track of all details like postal addresses. All orders are sent from Melbourne and delivered via Australia Post. Orders are normally received within 3-5 business days depending on when the order was placed.

Connecting Audio
Normal HDMI to HDMI connections support both Video and Audio, however due to Apple deciding not to support audio from MiniDisplay Port you'll need to run a seperate audio cable to get sound from your Mac to your TV/AMP. Most MacBooks are equiped with a dual 3.5mm audio socket which supports Optical and Digital signals. You can run a standard 3.5mm audio cable (headphone style plug) from your Mac and connect it to your TV or AMP via another 3.5mm plug, or RCA connectors depending on what your device accepts. Both of these cables are easily found at your local electronics store. However if you want better quality and Full Dolby surround sound you'll need to run a mini TOSLINK optical cable from the same 3.5mm connector on your Mac to a TOSLINK enabled TV, AMP or RECIEVER. These cables are a little hard to find so I have made them available below.
