Reverse Engineering

Reverse Engineering is a practice of converting existing products or designs into a format that can be reproduced or re-used. Use modern measuring measuring equipment and laser scanning devices, existing parts can be measured and scanned to produce data that a skilled CAD operator can converted back into useable 3D CAD files. These 3D CAD files can be used to re-manufacture the existing part or in most cases form a basis for improving on the design.

Typical exampes of where reverse engineering come in handy are:

  • Designing components to fit on existing geometry
  • Improving or modifying a design where no CAD data exists
  • Creating a mirror component where only one handed version of the part exists (useful for restoring cars or convering LH to RH drive)

CPDESIGN has experience with various reverse engineering processes and can advise on the right technology for your application. We can take data formats from most measuring equipment and turn them into useful CAD data.
